battery tray

When I hose off that area in the engine compartment, lot's of water get into the cabin. One of the nuts on the tray is pretty rusted and rounded out and I can't get it off. I want to grind it off but want to have a replacement tray on hand first.

2 questions:

Where can I buy a battery tray?

After I grind the nut and stud off, will I find the stud to be a regular bolt that is replaceable or is it welded in place?

You can get a battery tray from this Fastlane IIRC. You will need to remove the tray any way, as it could be some rust holes have formed from the acid released from the battery in vapor form. The stud is welded in place.

I think you need to go Mercedes OE for that one. This site doesnt have it listed. I managed to recover one from a yard and POR 15'ed it back to life.

You are going to find that you have a hole in the upper firewall. If you are unlucky like me, you will also have a hole in the lower fenderwell from acid dripping down the water drain thats in the ares. You need to fix this, and it can be a pain and time consuming. Do a search under my SN and theres some info.

My repair technique is that I took 16 gauge steel, cut it to the right size, pounded it to shape and pop-riveted into place. But it took a long time. I can describe more if you get to that point.

$68 for a new tray from the dealer ouch! I think I'll rust proof and keep the old one as it is not too far gone.

If I grind the nut and stud away, can I use a self tapping screw? What is the stud welded to? I am not looking forward to what it looks like under there. Thanks for the tips.

Depending on the severity of the rust under there, you may also find it has eaten away or into your sway bar mount, which is located directly under there and common to rust, and there is also a brake line for the right front wheel going under there that can become heavily corroded and cause worse things to happen...so this definitely needs to be checked and addressed.

You'll realize soon that you have a firewall hole in there. Rust will eat through the metal and part of the glue that holds the panels together allowing water to seep in and into the cabin. It will flow on the right side front passenger floorboard where the plastic cover for the vacuum lines hide it, and back into the right rear floorboard. Don't ask how I know!

Best solution is to fix the hole, and then proceed to replace the battery tray with a nice new MB one (or a good used one without rust - just have it repainted and coated properly).
