I can't shut my 116 off!! 1979 300SD
Hi folks,
After returning from a very short vacation (four days), I started my 79' 300SD but she wouldn't key off. Of course the old standby under the hood works but I cannot get this car to shut off the normal way. I suspect a vacuum leak somewhere and I have been having problems with the vacuum locks for a few months so I figured I would start with the central interlock first. Prior to my vacation if I unlocked the drivers door, eventually the other doors would follow. Today though I noticed that with the drivers door unlocked, the other locks didn't move. Last summer the locks worked great. Any advice from some of the "vacuum veterans" out there? I'm sure I could find the answer to my question if I searched the forum but I am really cut short on time here, so my apologies for beating a dead horse. BTW, this is a low mileage southern rust free car if that helps. Disconnect the locks temporarily from the vacuum system and see if the shut down improves. On a 123 I believe it is the yellow line that goes thru the firewall. Unplug it under the hood and plug the hole. If it shuts down ok then, you know the door vacuum system is at fault. More troubleshooting hints to follow if that doesn't work.

I had similar symptoms - 1st locks, then no shut off and finally no break assist! It was a faulty vacuum pump which had to be replaced. My mechanic put in a used one as new they're pricey.

incidentally, I do still have leaky locks, but that would involve tracing all the vacuum lines to find the leak and think I'll just live with that one for now - but no break assist was another story. Don't wait for that to happen!

They're rebuildable.
