E320 or E300TD???
I currently have a 1998 E320 with 46K miles on it. It is superclean and Im the second owner. I purchased a 1998 E300TD about a month ago with 95K miles on it and was wondering which should I keep? and which should I sell? since I really dont have room for both. Which is more reliable and trouble free in the long term? I plan on keeping either car for a very long time. Thanks for your advice.

Why would you buy a '98 diesel then ask if you should sell it? Personally, I would have kept the 98 gas with the low miles - the 1998 was an excellent car and the gas mileage shouldn't be too much of a deficit. I'd keep the '98 gasser.

The E320 will probably last 100-150K miles while the E300 can realistically last to 300K miles.
The E320 is more simple but the E300 is made better. The E320 will get about 25mpg average but the E300 can get 30mpg+ |

If you don't mind my asking what was the really great price? I just bought a 98 with 150K for 10.5K I thought that was a pretty good price. I hope you did better.

The M112 is a very stout design. It never needs a headgasket, no wiring harness issues, it has plugs that last 100K miles, and it gets incredible gas mileage.
I have no doubt the M112 will see 200 - 250K miles if taken care of. Most E320 gassers get around 30 mpg, some even better, on the highway at 70 mph. Albeit on premium gas. I'd sell the diesel and keep the gasser. The newer diesels are overpriced now, IMHO. But not to as much as a degree as the older W123's.

The newer diesel's are overpriced I wouldn't buy one. Sell the E300D, the M112 is a better motor. If you need to change the glow plugs on that E300D chances are you will have to pull the head, so there goes all your fuel mileage savings right there.
They are the same car. Same 722.6 transmission But the M112 is a simple problem free mill.

I'd keep the gasser. Frankly, I think the M112 is a better engine than the OM606.
M112 problem areas: 1) harmonic balance (not expensive to replace, likely all of them are fixed by now). 2) Plug wires don't last forever. Wires are ~$200 and easy to replace. OM606 problem areas: 1) Stuck glowplugs - sometimes several thousdand $$ to repair. 2) Fuel leaks. Plugs on the M112 last 5 years/100K miles. The glowplugs on my E300 went out every 3 years. - JimY |
