The thing about living over here is that if you have an old car, you're frowned upon. People think you're not doing very well.

Meanwhile, your neighbour buys a brand new Peugeot thats worth about 10% of its original value after 7 years, and has spent far more in depreciation than you ever did when you bought your 10-year old German barge She's also not driven around in sublime comfort with aircon and leather seats and a ****off big engine

There were hundres of thousands of MB vans sold in Europe and elsewhere with the 616 engine. Top speed was around 68mph. Even sold some with automatic transmissions. There are 20-26ft motorhomes all over Europe with that powerplant. Same van still made today in India by Tempo.

I have often wondered what it would be like to drive a manual RHD car and shift left handed. Is first still top left? (ie: same pattern?)
Yes. It is. And in a Mercedes it's a pain in the ass to engage reverse. In the LHD car you simply pull the shifter up and towards you and then forwards. A pretty natural action. But switch seats and you have to use your left hand to pull it up and away from you which as it turns out is considerably less comfortable. Do it enough times and you'll find yourself discovering unused abdominal muscles.

We have one of those 307D's at the shop.. 77 vintage.
Comes in fully loaded at 7700lbs, has the 65hp mill and a four-speed stick!
Tops 55mph on level terrain, when loaded and going uphill it's down to 35mph.. and that's with the engine howling at full throttle!

Funny thing is, it doesn't matter if it's loaded or empty, it's just as slow no matter what! Rattles less loaded, though.

Even has the gorilla knob!
