Well worth the effort
Pretty easy to remove the injectors or the glow plugs. Removing either will make it so much easier and smoother to run that engine around while feeding in the new chain. It is so much more difficult to crank it against the compression, so I would remove one or the other.

Timing Chain install Problem
Please tell me it's not - engine removal time. While feeding the new chain, I failed to use the method described in the Diesel Giant guide and fed part of the chain without turning the spur gear on top. What was the reason for aligning the two marks on the spur gear on top and will this affect timing? Should I continue without worries?
"What is this guy doing changing his timing chain, if he has so little knowledge?" you may ask. Bolts and nut are the same, I have an industrial mechanic background, gas turbines and the sort, don't jack about cars. Anyways your input would be appreciated, once again! |

is the chain all the way in now and master link in place? If you kept tension in the chain for the entire process and started in a random location you are probably ok, but you will need to verify timing by rotating the crank and proceed slowly. Errors in timing can damage valves even if you go slow. If you're way off, you may need to take the rocker arms off to keep the cam from actuating the valves when you retime. You will not need to remove the engine for any retiming procedure. The steps are 1. line up crank and cam per service manual and 2. retime IP per service manual. I've only done a 603 so I'll let the 617 experts chime in with the details.
