I put about 15% gas in the fuel to help clean a sticking injector. Maybe that caused the smoke??? I doubt it. But I'll re-adjust the valves and see what happens. It seems to have good vacuum. So I don't think it could be the vacuum pump. I don't know. I do know the car has 300k on it. It runs like a top but just LOTs of smoke when I give it some throttle. And it's not white smoke or black smoke it's blue so that bothers me. I'll give her a good cleaning later today hopefully. I consider working on a 617 somewhat relaxing. Well, when things are going good and I know what I'm doing. So I give it some time this afternoon and see what happens.
I agree, Check the obvious! I would not put ANY gasoline into a diesel engine unless it's very cold outside and it's hard to start otherwise. It is not a good idea to clean fuel injectors, there are products, like Diesel Kleen from power service that will do a better job! You are only going to encourage premature ring wear since gasoline is a solvent fuel and not a lubricant fuel. Try adding some Lucas "Keep that engine alive" to you oil after checking everything else. If your smoke drops, then I would say your valve guides are worn and your mileage is right on the money for replacement or head overhaul. Adjusting the valves will not alone cause blue smoke, but worn guides will be aggravated by a rush valve adjustment since the valve stem rocks back and forth in the guide anyway and if your valves are to tight, your only going to worsen this condition. If your valves are to loose then they don't follow the full stroke of opening and closing and may be pushed to one side a bit farther because of this. Does that sound logical? I used to be a Chrysler engineer for several years and I know I can get technical, but sometimes there is no other way to explain what is going on in there!

Thanks VS... The intake getting oil totally makes sense. How do I check the turbo for oil leaks? Also, There is oil on the valve cover from blowby. Well there was before I washed it. Since I don't see much. How do I tell if it's breathing?

I looked at the turbo unit and there is caked on oil on the bottom of the housing. LOTs of it. Also I think this is somewhat normal but there is some small amounts of oil on the part of the turbo that the u-duct connects to. If I wipe my finger on the inside area of the turbo, I have wet oil on my finger. Not dripping wet but it is there.

There is about 1/16" of play left to right on the turbo shaft but the turbo prop still spins free.

Also there is a clamped on black braided hose (looks like a fat version of a fuel injector return line) on the turbo. What is that?
