OM602 Harmonic Balancer
Greetings,
As I'm nearing the completion of my engine swap I have hit a snag. The harmonic balancer from the 1990 300D when installed on the 1987 190D is misaligned at about 90 degrees ATDC . I checked the alignment of the cam and number one cylinder and they align perfect so I know the timing hasn't jumped . The camshaft part numbers are the same. The part number on the balancer is 602 030 04 03. I went to car-part.com and the 1987 190D has the same part number. Is there a difference in crankshaft adapters? This is the part that is held by the one large bolt on the harmonic balancer and contains the alignment pin for the harmonic balancer. I'll pull the crankshaft adapter off my 1990 today to see if there interchangable. |

Fear, Dread, and Panic
The adapter for the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft are the same. I also checked that the timing indicators mounted to the timing cover are the same.
I am starting to come to the conclusion that the timing chain has jumped and I may have a couple of bent valves. |

Well the timing isn't off. I lined up the number one cylinder and camshaft marks and everything lined up. The harmonic balancer from my 1990 300D will not work on the 1987 190D. Damn it !
Anyone have any 1987 190D turbo engine parts in the northeast? Let me know! |

Pulled the adapter that mounts the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft and found that the woodruff key sheared in two!
I'm going to replace both keys on the adapter and timing/oil pump chain sprocket. Harmonic Balancers are the same! |
