405 psi on compression test. Is that good?

I just compression checked a cylinder or two on my 1980 sd with a 617 turbo. I got 405psi in the glow plug hole. I used a harbor freight compression tester. Is that a good reading?

405 is almost new pressure. that is very good. but just checking one cylinder is useless. you have to test them all. and they all have to be within 15% of each other.

Where's the rest?

Well, 405 psi is a good reading. I think better is about 450psi. But you should check and list them all. With all 5 readings you can better determine the condition of the engine

Also,
I didn't note it but that is the cold compression. I tested as the tester's instructions said. Pull all 5 glow plugs, insert tester, crank about 8 revs at full throttle. About 2 revs gave 270 or so and then 8 revs gave 405 and again 405 for a second 8. This was with all 5 glows removed.

Um, why did you do it at "full throttle"? on a diesel, there is no "throttle" blade, so it's not important to floor it for the compression test.

Didn't make sense to me. I figured it didn't really matter but the instructions said that about the throttle so I did it. I guess maybe the injectors shoot more fuel at full throttle??? I don't know. Probably doesn't matter.

Full throttle is for the gassers. Allows more air circulation to avoid a flodding condition after the sparkers are reinstalled. Not a thing to worry about with a diesel.

You're good, you may want to press stop lever when cranking, that should keep fuel from spraying out of the other cylinders.

405psi is extremely good for a non-rebuilt engine. Mine is down in the 320-350's.

I tested the '84 back in the fall when it had about 205K on it and they varied from 350-375 psi cold. 405 sounds great. I'm afraid to test the SD because its a little temper mental to start.
