Timing Question/ Cracked head shot 300SD
Well the verdict is in. It was a cracked head. I out lined the crack for you in white. I obtained a rebuilt head, up the street a German motors. this came off a car, with complete engine rebuild that got totaled right after. I checked the head, and it looked good to me.
Here is the situation. When I was removing the head, I lined up my TDC marks on the bearing tower and cam shaft, (and marked the sprocket and chain before i removed the sprocket), I used the power steering pulley for convenience sake to turn the cam. This in hindsight was probably a mistake. I did not get the balancer lower indicator to TDC, it is reading +8 degrees before i took off the sprocket, and still is at +8 with the sprocket and head off. I thought this was just a chain stretch indication and i could fix it on the way back with a woodruff key. The 1st cylinder head is laying flush with the top of the block where I thought it is supposed to be. The mechanic I talked to said that this could create a timing problem. He said you must always have that bottom indicator reading TDC before removing the chain. To fix it he said to...... 1. rotate bolt on the crank shaft until you get TDC at the balancer ( lower indicator) 2. replace the head and rotate the camshaft and sprocket to the TDC marks (without chain) 3. remount the chain and guides 4 rotate the engine twice before installing the rockers what do you guys think?.... I am a little hesitant with rotating the crankshaft with no sprocket on. Last edited by tommy2s; 07-30-2007 at 12:23 PM. |

If you install the head with cam, and it is at the TDC/timing mark, and the crank is only 8degrees off, I don't see a problem rotating the crank 8degrees to line it up. I've not done a head on a 603 yet so there must be something I'm missing when I see the line about installing the rockers??? Is this mechanic on the level?
