Anybody out there try one of these SOUND SHIELDS? They are suppose to cut down on the engine noise in the passenger compartment. Are they worth the money??? Oh ya... I don't really want to hear from the guy that is selling them!

My advice to you is to make your own. You can buy the fiberglass type noise-rejecting foam from Home Depot and some aluminum foil to proect it from heat. I'm planning to make my own when I have time.

I doubt whether they will cut down the engine noise at all. Mercedes added some sound isolation their selves and if the isolation on the firewall would help cutting down the noise that much, mercedes would have used it their selves.
I think that the isolation under the hood, under the engine and along the chassis beams are more important winning the noise-battle. greetingz,

Wouldn't this risk more sound to actually enter the passenger compartment due to reflection? The sound "has to go somewhere" :-)
I reckon a thorough isolation of the entire engine compartment including the hood and lower protection shields would be necessary to reduce the sound. But I also agree with Steve on the fact that MB most likely would have done this if it could have helped. A friend of mine suggested to dismantle the dashboard and add sound-insulation behind this instead. Don't know if this would have worked though.. Regards! |

Hey,
I've considered the Sound Shield myself. I was thinking it may be better to use a product like Dynamat (used for soundproofing/reducing in high-end car stereo environments) on the underside of the hood, and possibly on the walls of the engine compartment. On the 240D, there seems to be room on the engine compartment side of the firewall to attach some dynamat without too much trouble or direct heat. Could take your door panels off and put it in there, too. It might get spendy to do a whole car, but I'd think it would be pretty good. The sound shield sounds like a first step in sound reduction. Looks like Dynamat has a package for hoods. 1 18"x32" piece for $34.95 (retail) that covers 4 cubic feet. Or buy 9 pieces for $249 (retail) 36 cubic feet. They say it's heat reflective and typical coverage requires 2 to 3 sheets. Then they have a hood liner that looks like a shiny piece of foam which they say with the first product applied provides maximum sound reduction. 1 32" x 54" x 0.75" piece is $69, covering 12 cubic feet. Sounds like you can use the hood liner alone (oil and water resistant) or with the first product for maximum sound reduction. Could probably buy a few sheets of the hood liner, cut them up and mount them around the engine compartment with pretty good results. If I get that 240D, I'll probably give it a try, or at least look further into it. That thing is LOUD at 65mpg. Any other experiences out there with the sound shield product (does it really help) or other products? Later. -m PS: Looks like Dynamat is sticky on one side--should be easy to apply, no gluing.
