Glow Plug Trouble

I have a 1982 300TD that was working fine and starting up with no problem. That is not the case today. The glow plugs seem to have stopped working and she won't start.

The light on the dash comes on and turns off after about 10 seconds, but when I feel the block around the glow plugs it's ice cold. No heat whatsoever. The 80 amp fuse is fine and actually heats up when I turn the glow plug circuit on. I checked continuity from the plug on the relay that goes to the glow plugs, all 5 plugs read fine. I pulled the time relay plug off and I am not getting 12 volts at terminal 15.

Does this mean I need to replace the relay or could there be some other issue I should check first. I'll be at the junkyard tomorrow so I can pull one for good measure. Any tips would help.

Thanks.

Try reading the voltage at the GPs themselves when it is glowing, it should be about 11V. Regardless of the light, they should glow for about 40 seconds. Don't assume the strip fuse is good just because it looks OK, it can have a hairline crack.

yeh, check the voltages at the end of the wire that attaches to teh GPs (ground the other negative end).

same thing happened to me not too long ago...converting to veggie i was turning my car off and on and the like quite a bit...i must have burned up not only my relay but a few plugs, as 4 were gone. and there was no current at the GP terminal.

i got an updated glow relay module for about 100 on ebay (which included 5 brand new bosch GPs!!)...not only that but it's the kind with afterglow, so that it will still glow the plugs after the engine starts for another 3 minutes!!

awesome!

I also have one of those in my 300D, if you do need a new relay those are an improvement.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check the voltage at the plugs themselves tomorrow. Where did you guys find the relays? Last time I looked a few months ago everyone was out of stock.
