Symptoms of Injection pump failure?
How many of you have had an injection pump go out? What happened? What were the symptoms. This for the '83 300 SD 617.951 engine. Thanks.

They rarely fail except from poor/contaminated fuel or wear from lots of miles.
Alot of times is something simple like a bad injector, delivery valve, incorrect injection timing (worn chain), or other maintenance issues like skimping on the valve adjustment intervals. |

That's good info, but how did it fail? Was there any warning, poor performance or did it just stop working? Did it mimick a bad fuel pump or would the car just run like like crap?

My IP didn't really fail, it just started to leak significantly (below the seals) and the car developed a rough idle. It had full power, even with the leak.

I had one that was bad when I bought the car... It was *always* very hard to start (and I live in the south!), ran rough the first few minutes, smoked (white smoke, aka unburned diesel) like mad from ~900-1400RPM, knocked like crazy at those same RPMs, and it always shook at idle. It did just fine when you got it out of those RPM ranges though!
I changed *everything*... new nozzles, glowplugs, checked the timing... etc. The only thing that fixed it was replacing the IP. I've done a little more reading on how IPs work lately... I still have no idea what was broken on the pump.
