New to forum, 300sd
Hello All, I've been gleaning plenty of information from previous posts, but decided to ask a few questions of my own, even though they've probably been asked already.
First, the details of my car. I bought it a month ago (1983 300sd) with about 270k on the clock. I've so far changed the oil and filter, coolant, thermostat, brake pads, brake fluid, fuel filters, air filter, tires, front wheel bearings, and a few belts. The next things on my list are a timing chain, valve adjustment, transmission flush and fill and pan gasket/filter clean and replacement and ALDA adjustment, in that order. I think I've covered everything so far, but I was wondering if anyone knows of anything else I should do? My priming pump leaks like crazy (fuel everywhere) when I use it so I just keep it sealed up and bled the IP by cracking the injector lines and cranking it until fuel came out. The car is a little rusty but from the looks of it has at least another 50k left in it. I haven't been around a diesel benz in about 8 years but I remember how fantastically solid our family's old 1980 240d was for the ten years we had it. Thanks in advance for all the advice! |

I think you have covered most of it, except draining/changing the diff.
But you need to pay attention to all the old rubber (ball joints/tie rods/track mounts/flex discs/center support bearing/rear subframe/diff mount) and make sure someone has already replaced them. If not , and you plan to keep the car, it's your turn. Rick

chain stretch
you might not need a new timing chain - it all depends on the frequency of the oil changes by the previous owner.
Next time you have the valve cover off (doing a valve adjustment), line up the marks at the end of the cam and cam tower (on the chain end) and then take some pics of the crank marks - it will show you how much stretch you have with the chain. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=78035

I enjoy your choice of forum name, and often resemble it in real life. Nice choice, and welcome.

Power steering fluid flush and filter change in the power steering pump.
It is cheap, easy, and well worth it. The old stuff is likely worn out. Please use only power steering fluid, not transmission fluid. I used the high-mileage stuff in the red bottle.

Personally, I would rather replace the chain than play around with offset keys. Having it done correctly isn't very expensive and you don't have to mess with it for another 200K miles, or so. |

Oh, a follow up question:
Does anyone know which engine number (61x.xx) my car would have? Is there a way to check (stamped on the block somewhere?) |

If it is an SD, I believe it's 617.951.

Regardless, the best solution seems to be finding a qualified mechanic and using OEM parts, not to avoid replacing the chain. You can't really run the original chain indefinitely, so you will have to deal with it sooner or later. I prefer to replace the chain about every 200K just to get it out of the way. |

Replace the primer too, if not going to use bio-fuel, go with the black one.
