Deconstructing the W123 - Built like a cathedral
They don't make them like they used to.

I agree...James May hit it right on in that article. People pay way too much attention to the "here and now" "green-ness" of a car.....if the thing only lasts 6-8 years....and another needs to be built and shipped as a replacement, it will consume far more energy than an extremely well built car that took a bit extra materials and energy to make in the first place....but lasts 30+ years easily. Long live the W123 and W126....I think MB should make some revisions to them (for safety stuff and the older electronics) and make/sell them again. That'd be awesome.

I have always felt that the W123 along with the OM616/617 represented the pinnacle of MB technology, this is tech that works for you, nothing fancy, just plain built to last, this article confirms my feelings to full extent.

Cost of a new car?
Does anyone have data or a web site reference on the environmental cost of building a new car? There should be a way to add it up....refining the steel, making the plastics and rubber, mining and refining the special metals for the special battery (in hybrids), the special materials and processes for the electronics...the list goes on and on. It would be good for us to know this as an additional argument in favor of keeping our old Benzes (as opposed to "we like them" ).

there was an article cited, along with long technical discussion over at bob is the oil guy. The problem that you will always find about such analyses is that they can be performed with the boundaries of analysis set around whatever arbitrary things that the study desires. It is extremely easy to put spin on the analysis in the favor of the funding source, and so for as correct as the study may be, it can not ever be trusted.
The last one I saw compared the H2 hummer to a prius, and considered everything down to peoples' office space... the H2 won by quite a bit, and Ill see if I can find it. JMH

http://www.machinedesign.com/ASP/viewSelectedArticle.asp?strArticleId=62491 The study is from CNW research and can be found here: http://cnwmr.com/nss-folder/automotiveenergy/ I downloaded it went over it once, and it was a few hundred pages if I recall. Pretty cool stuff though. One thing you have to remember is that design cost is factored in. ANY new vehicle designed from the ground up will make the car look expensive when that is factored in. Over time, that would diminish. But then again, so might the technology, and therefore more design costs...

http://www.triplepundit.com/pages/askpablo-time-to-get-a-new-car-002538.php It comes to conclusion it's better for the environment to get the 2008 Prius... I left a comment on that article, I was wondering if it wouldn't be the most environmentally friendly method to just swap in a cleaner burning engine and more efficient tranny. Should keep all costs at minimum assuming rest of the car is in maintainable shape (no rust bucket..)

Thats why I like MB's, they are ment to be taken apart and fixed. Very few cars are made like that, Rolls Royce comes to mind as well.
IMHO the W126 is one of the best car designs ever. But it has its short falls like everything else.
