I can't find my transmission vacuum valve levers!!!
...I'm sure there is a good explanation for this, but I can't find the vacuum valves that are normally mounted on top of the valve cover. I haven't had time to find the diagram for my car and trace my vacuum lines yet, but I figured I would post here in case someone can ease my worries in the meantime. I have a 1984 300DT, Automatic Transmission (original according to verbal confirmation with previous owner). I'm going through the previous owners' maintenance records as soon as I post this thread to verify that it is the original transmission. I'm attaching a couple of photos in case anyone feels like trying to figure out what I am talking about. (And also to make sure I am not crazy ) Any help, or words of encouragement would be appreciated! -jh

On thop of the valve cover, there is a black plastic cover (rectangular). Look for where your accelorator linkage meets the vc, they are uner that box. I'd just remove them. They don't really play a vital role in shifting, until they leak, of course.

Thanks...that is exactly what I can't find - BUT it's good to know that you can remove them - I think mine have already been removed...

It should be on the vc, directly next to the stop lever.

Wait, looking closer @ that first pic, they have already been removed. Gone. Why are you trying to find them?

It looks to me like someone has already removed them, and probably disabled the EGR as well. If the tranny is shifting properly and you don't have any vacuum issues, I would leave it as is.

I'm having some shifting issues - 1/2 and 2/3 seem early, and then 3/4 only comes when I get up to speed and the let off the throttle. So I was going to check the vacuum lines - the ones that I did check were all up to par with the DIY on the diesel giant site.

Sounds like you should be looking more to the Bowden cable. You vac pressure to the tranny could be a bit high, too.

All is well...
ok -
So, someone did remove them, and I adjusted the bowden cable and it shifts much smoother. (thanks MattBelliveau and Craig)

That looks like an '85 setup. It may never have had the valves up there.
