190D 2.5 Turbo ECU Help

Hi,
I've been reading all the posts for a few months now and I decided to join when I purchased a 190D 2.5 Turbo to swap into my 190E. Unfortunately I was incredibly naive and assumed into would have completely mechanical fuel injection or in other words no computer. From the research I have done it seems the only actuators the computer controls happen to be the EGR solenoid and the idle solenoid on the IP. I can live without the computers control of the EGR and will use a boost controller for the wastegate but can I run the car without the idle control? I don't want to have to buy a new computer at some $1280 from performance products. Any insight and recommendations are much appreciated. Thanks
Casey

got your message

i responded, PGA doesnt have any but i found the mega national parts inventory, http://car-part.com/

"car-part.com" never woulda guessed it!

they have a dozen of them starting at $225, in your search under "part" select "computer box - engine" theyre all right there. Might want to double check the part numbers though.

sounds like a pretty cool project. i think everyone would like to see some picks if you have some, especially the 190 people.

Depends on the year engine. The '87 was as you describe, the later '90-'93 in the 300D 2.5Turbo has more electronics involved.

It seems to be an 87 to me or so I was informed. Can't seem to find the flap inside the intake that the 300sd has. Any other tell tale signs?
Thanks again

Kinda hard to tell by looking but an 87 602 turbo actuator opes the wastegate under vacuum. A 90-93 602 actuator closes the wastegate under vacuum.

Or you can be a sissy and check the engine serial number on the horizontal surface of the block above where the IP attaches. 602961 prefix = 87 190Dt, 602962 prefix = 90-93 300D 2.5t.

I think there's a set screw to adjust base idle. Base idle is something like 500 rpm vs EDS controlled idle of 650 rpm. I don't know if the set screw adjusts to 650 rpm. If you had AC and headlights going at 500 rpm it'd probably stall.

The tach amp might be wired through the EDS. If so, no EDS, no tach.

It is indeed a 190D 2.5 Turbo 602.961. However the line from the wastegate connects directly the the intake manifold side of the turbo as if it opens under positive pressure rather than vacuum. So what do you think can i get away with ignoring the computer?

I would say yes. If base idle adjustment doesn't support 600-650 rpm, you should be able to rig something along the throttle linkage. Or get a sparky friend to simulate a fixed idle signal to the IP.

Sounds good. Do you know the signal range for the IP Soleniod. Also as a side note what transmission does this id number indicate? It is a manual and I haven't been able to find any Mercedes manual gearbox identification charts.

That transmission would be commonly called 716.213 but good luck finding any info on it in English.

Did the transmission come attached to the 602? If not, is the 602 crank drilled for a pilot bearing?

Dave M/gsxr might know the signal range for the idle controller.

This site suggests it's off a W124 200D/E200d

There's no electronics. Pump is mechanical. I suggest that you forget engine swap. You gotta understand differencies between gas burner and diesel. Did you know that key switch is different? Gasoline engine have electrical connections and diesel runs vacuum thru the key. You can't stop diesel if vacuum is not properly connected. That was just a one example.

It's better to buy diesel. Forget the swap.

I'm afraid it's a bit to late to forget it as I have engine all accessories and gearbox. I have ways around problems such as the one you mentioned. If I can get the thing to run correctly without spending to much more I will be happy.

Alright I need some help again. Got the motor started today and it ran with a little sputtering (I think it needs new fuel filters). Anything other suggestions as to the cause of the sputtering would be quite helpfull. I was also wondering what the oil line coming from the bottom of the oil filter canister with a nipple at the top goes to? Thanks
