oil in airfilter pan ect... help!

I am a brand new Benz owner. I know that I can search for help threads already posted. I have looked on there for answers, but it is tough to find them. I thought I might post the problems I have encountered on my 83 300 sd and see if any one might have answers or point me to some threads. Here goes
I am willing to do a lot myself. I am fairly mechanical and have a lot of tools.
The car shows 383418 miles. the odometer does not work. The engine has about 50K on it since a rebuild along with the transmission.
The things that do not work
1. Odometer
2. dash lights do not work (radio missing also)
3. sunroof very slow and sometimes will not shut
3. front windows will not roll down
4. several of the buttons missing on the dash in the middle I have the hazard light and the sunroof buttons, but know there are three more buttons missing. Not sure what those buttons do. Please inform me about what those buttons do.
5. the Ac has been converted but was not working. I pulled a vacuum on it and did not find leaks so I charged it and now it is working fine. However the compressor makes a lot of noise.
6.Passenger door on the left side will not open and the lock knob is
missing.
7. I changed the air filter and found some oil in the air filter pan. (is that normal?)
8. Apparently there is a primer on this car so I primed it 1 time and then it started leaking. I screwed it a little tighter and it stopped.
9. There was a lot of rust pieces in the spare tire spot and I could not find anything rusted inside until I looked up under the rear window. it is rusted badly there. What do I need to do about that?
10. There is a clunking noise coming from the front left tire area when I put on the brakes. It only cluncks once when I apply the brakes. What could that be?
11. The transmission shifts smooth, but very premature for what I am used to, but it does not seem to affect the power. I get all the gears before 30mph.
That is all that i see right now. i just bought it today for $600

here we go...

The things that do not work
1. Odometer -- Search for Odometer fix. You probably have a slipping drive gear
2. dash lights do not work (radio missing also) Check the fuses. I would replace all of them as PM
3. sunroof very slow and sometimes will not shut You need to grease the mechanism. Search for sunroof fixes. You need a special MB grease for this. Also check the trim panel to make sure it is not warped.
3. front windows will not roll down do the rears work? If they do, you probably need new motors on the fronts. Get them from a junkyard.
4. several of the buttons missing on the dash in the middle I have the hazard light and the sunroof buttons, but know there are three more buttons missing. Not sure what those buttons do. Please inform me about what those buttons do. Buttons left to right 1- rear dome light, 2-sunroof, 3-hazard, 4-power antenna, 5- rear defogger
5. the Ac has been converted but was not working. I pulled a vacuum on it and did not find leaks so I charged it and now it is working fine. However the compressor makes a lot of noise. Check the belt and tension it if needed. Loosen all three bolts holding the compressor and then tighten the small tensioner nut with long bolt visible from the top left of the comp.
6.Passenger door on the left side will not open and the lock knob is
missing.
7. I changed the air filter and found some oil in the air filter pan. (is that normal?) Check the drain under the air cleaner to make sure it is connected. check the hose running from the valve cover to the air cleaner. you can replace this with one that does not drip as much oil.
8. Apparently there is a primer on this car so I primed it 1 time and then it started leaking. I screwed it a little tighter and it stopped. Replace it with the new design primer
Could be major headache- have the suspension checked by a reputable shop.
11. The transmission shifts smooth, but very premature for what I am used to, but it does not seem to affect the power. I get all the gears before 30mph. To make it shift later, adjust the bowden cable (attached to the linkage at the top of the valve cover) Loosen it to make the trans shift later.
That is all that i see right now. i just bought it today for $600

You can buy most every part you need by clicking the "buy parts" tab at the top of the page. Do searches of this forum to find just about every procedure and tip for these cars. Also buy the MB shop manual on CD.

Welcome to the club! Once you get her sorted out, you will really love the car!

trim panel...

On my '81 the panel that covers the metal sunroof was warped. I found out by removing it to check the cable and grease it. When I operated the roof without the panel it worked smoothly and quickly. With the panel in place it would bind up when it was about 3/4 shut. I gave the panel a bend and it works better now. You can remove the panel by opening the roof about 1/3 and then removing some clips along the front edge and pulling it down.

Do a search on sunroof and you will see detailed instructions on how to do it.

Yep... my 81 is a 300SD W126. the panel is made from a metal frame and headliner material and is attached to the actual metal sunroof at the front.
