300 Sdl

Are there any specific problems with the engines in the 1986 300 SDL.

First Welcome!

I have a 603.961 engine and don't have any complaints, problems or worries. However as you can imagine there are others with different views. Hit the search button and put "603" into the box. There is more than enough reading there to keep anyone busy for a while and you can get both sides of the story.

The only real problem that I'm aware of is that if the engine gets overheated, it can crack the head. The bottom end is quite strong and not prone to the problems that occurred with the later model 350SDL (the rod-bender)

BTW, the 86SDL that I have undergoing an engine transplant is not the result of an engine flaw. The previous owner drive over a rough RR crossing, busted the oil pan and kept driving (albeit, not long, but long enough to toast the engine)

True, but that's the case of any car with an aluminum head. I cracked one 20 years ago on a turbo Escort.

I'm rebuilding an '86 300SDL now. I'm not worried about it.
