I have a 3" exhaust from the turbo outlet down to a side exit before the RR tire.

Since I didn't know what a cherry bomb was I looked it up on wikipedia... A glasspack, sometimes called cherry bomb (a popular brand of glasspack), is a kind of automobile muffler in which the exhaust gas passes straight through the center of the muffler. Packed fiberglass surrounds the exhaust channel and absorbs some of the high-frequency sound. from this page... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasspack ok, once again for the slow kids... theres no packing material in the muffler. It uses noise canceling among other things to perform its function. I ponied up $129 for it on ebay over a year ago, and I thought that price was pretty salty. I'd never pay 200, But I think deals can be had. Here is the thread that I posted (that no one replied to) from 05/2006 http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=153230 IMHO It is a superior product, heavy gauge 304 SS, very solid w/ gorgeous welds. I have no affiliation w/ the company. Here is their technology page w/ longish video... a bit much at times, but largely within the confines of believability. http://www.aeroexhaust.com/aero_performance_exhaust.html heres a view from the tailpipe perspective. I'll revive that thread, and post pics over there, sorry again for hijacking.

Will straight piping actually produce any difference in performance for a turbocharged 617 engine? My understanding is that the turbocharger creates significant back pressure in the exhaust system, so it seems that unlikely that any performance gains would result from removing the muffler.

It does make a difference, by eliminating any further back pressure, it lets the turbo spool up quicker, also the scavenging of exhaust gasses is far better as indicated by EGT and overall engine temp.
