Personally the "noise" and "smell" don't phase me a bit either. I drive around with all of the windows down all of the time anyway so why would it be any "worse" in a convertible? The noise and smell aren't any different in my Wrangler whether the top is up or down.

It just comes down to supply and demand. The demand for convertibles is a fraction of the demand for coupes which is a fraction of the demand for sedans. The demand for diesels is a fraction of those fractions so the demand for a diesel convertible just isn't enough for the manufacturers to justify making them. Even though there are sickos like myself who would buy one. I'm eagerly awaiting a diesel Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

To bad they are not building the SL400CDI, such a shame.

But this is a lot faster...

Although I have to say if you were looking for an older SL, I'd go with an R129 SL500. The M119 is a sweet honey of an engine. It really sings when up on its cams.
I've heard they are making the SLK320CDI though. The concept car had a tri-turbo V6

Wouldnt it be easier, and safer just to swap a diesel engine into a gasser convertible? the SL?

I'm surprised nobody has suggested taking a 300CE or E320 cabrio and putting a OM602, 603, or 606 in it.

I keep toying with the idea of rebuilding one of several Rabbit diesel engines I have lying around and repowering a 81-92 VW Cabriolet. It's a drop-in conversion- no fabrication required. But I haven't found a clapped-out Cabriolet cheap enough, plus as long as the little buzz bomb truck is running I'm not so motivated.
