616 powered Land Rover takes another trip

Up to the James Bay area and Caniapiscau. 4300 miles, (1100 on gravel) and averaged 20mpg. Broke a weld on the muffler and had a water pump go south on the way home but besides that the truck ran perfectly. If you're not familiar with the area, it's as far north as you can drive in the northeast and the farthest you can be from a town in North America. In Caniapiscau we were 461 miles from the nearest town.

Here are a couple pictures.

Very interested to hear about this. I've got a spare 616 and thinking of rebuilding it and putting it in either a S1 or SIIA Landrover. Are there converter plates/bell housins available? Did you have to cut the bulkhead/fabricate a lot of new mounting material? How does it perform c.f. the LR 2.5 NA diesel?

Hi Harry.
I make and sell an adapter plate to bolt the engine to the Rover transmission. I think I sold my last two this morning but will have more made up before too long. There are some things that you'll need to modify and fabricate yourself, but nothing that's rocket science. And no, the bulkhead doesn't have to be modified.

The Benz engine is probably comparable to the 2.5 but as you know it's a much better engine and parts for the Rover diesel state-side are almost impossible.

Here's a link to my website that has some information about my truck and the conversion. http://www.seriestrek.com

Thanks Jim, I'll keep all that in mind. Must admit I think Landruiser's walk all over LR's, but I have two so might as well make do. Love the 240s so it makes sense. SPose it'd cost a fair bit to ship an adaptor plate to UK though...

Looks like a fun adventure in a cool vehicle, but I still want a Gelandewagen., preferably with an OM603 turbo.

I'm jealous. I've wanted to canoe the rivers that end up in the James Bay for many years (Missinaibi). Recently read a story about a trailer sailer who took his boat up there for some remote sailing.

Now that takes me back....

to 1984 driving the Alaskan Highway from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Fairbanks, Alaska. Same kind of gravel road for 1,500 miles and equally unforgiving conditions. Fuel hundreds of miles apart and no one dared drive after dark, even the truckers that would run 55mph on gravel. Too bad its since been paved...

What a great adventure!

I always enjoy your Rover pics, but why all the stickers on the windows? Stepping all over the good look of your ride.
