check the post Chine engine Replacement. That is a om616 replaced with a om616. But the om617 is pretty much the same thing with an additional cylinder.

Now on the is it possible? yes, but. you need to swap preferably the engine with the transmission, the drive shaft and the diffrerential! It is not difficult just laborously tedious. Also if you have a pre1980 car you should consider swapping the peripherical accesories as well (PS pump, AC pump, CC servo) nevertheless keep the AC manual valves that is the one thing great about the pre 1980 240D's.

It is actually simpler in the 115 chassis cars in that the driveshafts are the same length with either the four or the five cylinder engine....you do want to swap the taller gear in with the five cylinder engine though.

thanks for the info thus far guys. i did the search and really not turning up exactly what i'm looking for. i am seeing a lot of swapping 300 and 240 within the 123 chassis..but since the 76 isn't a 123 that's why i asked the question.
definitely good stuff...and i'm still in the info gathering phase. i am hoping to get some more info, naturally.

cheers!

Since it looks like you are wanting to put a W123 engine into a W115 chassis, there will definitely be a problem with the oil filter housing. They are in two different locations and I believe it is an interference fit. Probably a few other issues, but this one is a given. Can be worked out though.

A W115 with a ('75 or '76) 617 and a manual transmission would be cool. However if I remember correctly the rear differential would need to be swapped as well as the ignition switch and speedometer from the W115 300D (for glow plug light and vacuum engine shutoff) and there may be a few other things as well. Also, I've noticed the W115 300D has less room under the hood than the 240D.

If you wanted to do the 617 turbo from a W123 that would be incredible, but also very difficult as the engine wouldn't fit without serious modifications. Somewhere there was a thread on here with pictures of a car that had a 5 speed and a 617 turbo in a W115, but it hadn't been finished yet. Wonder what happened to that car?

It's been owner hopping around the country. It was for sale about a year ago and again around April.

BTW we did convert my 74 240 from four to five cylider power. I bought a complete 300d and swapped the engine tranny, rear end, radiator, speedo, and some glow relays etc over. It was a happy conversion.

The body side mount for the second engine shock had to be fabricated.

It is best to start with a complete donor car.

The car I started with was a euro model that I happened to buy from Jim Schrager the Porsche guru who writes for sports car market magazine. I met him at a ustore place in South Bend....I remember at first thinking he looked vaguely familiar, then I noticed a lot of porsche 911s sitting in one area, and noticed his name on the bill of sale and finally after the sale was complete asked if he was the writer. He was a really nice fellow. We had a little discussion about porsches (it was short as my knowledge of them is) and other cars before I took it away.

After I bought it, I put a plate on it and drove it around for a few hours to be sure it was a good engine. iirc I paid 600 or so for that car,

So I wasn't just asking something that's been covered extensively here?
Seems there's limited amounts of info. on this project. I haven't even bought the 115 yet, but there's one for sale near me, so it just got me thinking.
Keep the ideas coming!

The main issue, as others have noted, is the oil filter of the later 617s will interfere with the steering box of the W115. There is a member of this site who makes and sells an adaptor plate that will allow you to relocate the oil filter. The kit is designed for use when installing a MB engine in an old Land Rover, but should work perfectly for this application too.
