vac pump spewing oil

grr. just when I had nailed down the glow plug issues and gotten running again...
the vacuum pump is leaking oil around the gasket. ok. no big deal, just need a new gasket, right?
but wait, there's more!
it appears that the vacuum pump has diligently been pumping not air into the air cleaner, but, that's right, OIL into my air cleaner and intake...
I have not had enough free time to open the darn thing up, but I wonder if anyone knows exactly what I need to do so I might expedite this repair in an efficient and proper manner. I see a repair kit and gasket from Fastlane in my future...

First off...get rid of that air hose to the air cleaner.
Don't know when they changed but 1981 up dumped into the crankcase.

The single vac' line pump with fit your motor....or should.
...or have you got a lot of blowby ?

The vacuum diaphragm might be torn. If so, then fix it SOON, because you can pump oil all throughout your vacuum system and make a BIG mess, which is a BIG pain in the a$$ to fix. Also, driving it without proper vacuum going to the transmission is BAD for the transmission.

Smile cdplayer

I learned the hard way too with my first Benz. A 1980 300 CD. The diaphram in the vac. pump developed a tear. Must have dumped a quart of oil into the air breather before I noticed any problems. I had oil in all the vacuum lines through the firewall and up under the dash. Had to dismantle each vacuum ball and blow the lines clear. Didn't know much about diesels then. But thanks to Pic N Pull I was able to cure my problem.

Revival

hello again,
haven't had the time to fix this issue but now need to take another crack at it.
1979 300D - vacuum pump blows oil into intake. can I swap with later model pump? local pic-n-pull has a couple of the single port pumps or should i just rebuild the original and avoid incompatibility possibilities?

thanks

Yours is the early type which is cheap and easy too rebuild, then you know what you have. The junk yard one could be bad. Then you'd have to rebuild the expensive one
