ignition situation 123.150
I have a little issue on my hands. I am no stranger to making tumbler replacements or drilling out wheel lock assemblies on these old w123 diesels... however my new car (1979 300CD w123.150) has me a little confused. The ignition has no release pin on the tumbler...I want to replace it as soon as I can with a new one, so as not to have to take the lock assembly out. Does anyone have any clue as to how the tumbler can be removed without too much fuss on one of these older units?

Ignition lock tumbler early 123 same problem -- no hole for paperclip
I have the same problem with my 1979 300D. I want to remove and replace the tumbler and I already bought a new one, but the old tumbler is different and has no hole. It does have a snap ring which I removed, but so far that uncovered no hole.
I can post a photo if that would help. |

The very early W123 that has a chrome ring that just pulls off has a pin to the side in approximately the 2 o'clock position, I believe. Check the FSM- it is illustrated.

Solved
Thanks!
For anyone else with this problem: You need to remove the whole steering lock from the car with the tumbler attached. Then look for the hole in the _side_ of the tumbler cylinder. With the key in the 1 position push a heavy wire into that hole and towards the left (counterclockwise on the cylinder). That will depress a spring loaded tab and allow the tumbler to be removed . The CD manual I had did not show this variation. |
