Refill of viscous fan clutch pictures
 

1. Start picture (same as finish ;))
2. Bimetal strip removed. Center pin visible and allen set screw in a drilled and tapped hole to the right.
3. Set screw (previously drilled and tapped) removed.
4. Set screw and pin removed.
5. Fill 'er up, Sir?

6. 10000 cst silicone oil and irrigating syringe were used.

I put in what "felt right" as far as amount (yeah...really accurate ;))
Took longer to take the pictures than to do.

Where did you purchase the silicone?

funny you should post this. My clutch fan is out on my 280e and I was pondering my alternatives.

Someone on the forum had a bulk amount and offered it at cost. Problem is.... I can't remember who the good samaritan is :o, so I can credit him. There is a fairly recent post that has a list of sources (hobby shops, eBay and such).

Has anybody tried using the "Toyota silicone oil, part number 08816-03001-get (2) each" suggested in the Porsche how to? Today was the first hot day in Portland and I noticed that the car was running 20* hotter than usual. I popped the hood when I got home to see how much resistance the fan clutch gave and got burnt by the aluminum fan. :rolleyes:. The fan clutch was totally loose, and I found my spare sitting in a puddle of it's own juices. :(


How did you remove the center pin?

I used -06001 fluid in the SDL.

The pin just pulls out after you remove the bimetal strip.

I've been puzzling the method whereby the pin causes the engagement.
I notice that at rest., warm or cold when starting the fan is always engaged for a few minutes. I envisioned that the fluid had flowed to the bottom and starts dragging the driven part. What is puzzling to me is what does the snap action of the bimetal do? Does it divert fluid from a storage compartment to the clutch faces? Is there a piloted scoop passage to perhaps remove fluid from the outside to a central storage which is released to the outside by the bimetallic operated pilot? Haven't been able to find any diagrams so far.

Anyone know where to get the fluid?

Any Toyota parts counter can get it for you but it'll likely be a special order. Ask for it by part number 08816-xx001 where xx is 03, 06 or 10 depending on the centistokes (viscosity?) value you want. Don't get tangled in a debate about what car it's for.

What the hell? I did not know you could do that. I just replaced my clutch.

If it leaked out the first time... Isn't it safe to say it will leak out again fairly quickly? Can you see where it is coming out?

Can I just drill a screw in and always have it in "on"?

Centistokes is a measure of viscosity. Which is ideal? Does it depend on the climate?
