Thinking of buying an IP that the Chain broke on

I found an IP for a 602 engine today at a good price. The guys engine destroyed itself when the timing chain broke. Would the Injection Pump still be ok? The camshaft on the engine is sheared.

Tom's Imports of Columbia MO Ruined the IP in changing leaky delivery valve O-Rings - Refused to stand behind his work. Mid-MO MB drivers-AVOID Tom's.

I do not believe a broken chain could hurt the IP.

I don't see any way the pump could have been damaged.

I would estimate there is a better than 95 percent chance the pump was not hurt. The cam damage probably occured after the chain let go. If you were considering additional loads on the injection pump shaft and bearings that is.
I also cannot remember any member having a damaged pump because of a chain letting go. Cheap sounds good as well. My kind of price.

I'd bet the only way a broken chain could damage the pump is if the broken chain folded over itself and the engine momentum continued to pull the chain around the pump sprocket, bending or breaking the nose off the IP's shaft.

But, that would be a rare and amazing event.

Actually on a 617 (I don't know about a 60_) the drive sprocket is completely separated from the pump and the final connection is with that infernal little splined connector (which can fail on an engine that is very very worn such as my 84 240d).

777funk, If your deal for the 602 IP falls through, contact me. I have a ip from 602.911 that became surplus when the rods for # 4 and 5 went through the block
