Please help, buying a W123 300D Turbo Diesel

Hi there:

I am test driving this car this weekend.

I would like to know what I should look for, in terms of technical/mechanical issues. And anything else I should be aware of in this model.

Many thanks!

what year, how many miles....

check for blowby.... unscrew engine oil fill cap while engine is running ...let cap sit loose on opening... good is no movement on cap.... bad is cap jumping around to much....

vacuum operated components working? ac working? glow plugs working? suspension ok? smoke? etc

Another good forum is the Oil Burner Kartel (run by a member here)

For what to watch for in this car apart from the diesel engine, read this:

David Kempton's buyer's guide (he is from England) is a good one.

Rust is the biggest enemy of these cars. Check everywhere for it.
Especially at the jack points, around the window seals, underneath the car.

check the Air conditioning blows cold and heats hot, the seats don't sag, and there is no slop in the suspension

They are wonderful cars, easy to maintain, will run forever, and be warned the prices are firm on them because of the interest in biodiesel.
