Who says you can't go home again? Just bought back my 240/300.

This morning I sold off my infernal Magnum. I shortly thereafter headed out to the little car lot where my old 83 240/300d was sitting forlornly. So I rescued it and bought it back. It has some not too serious body damage and needs some brake work but the engine started up on the first 1/2 second of cranking and purred along just like it did when I sold it along two years ago.

I have most of the parts to get the body in shape and after that it will go to the body shop for light refurbishing and an overall respray in the original Ivory.

AFIK this is only the second time I have owned the same car twice and both have been the 123 mercedes. My 84 280e euro and now this baby.

For those who might not know about it it is an 83 240d us spec car that I brought back from texas about five years ago with a blown motor and automatic tranny. I then bought an 83 300d euro with a stick and transferred the drive train over there. While it was out I had my favorite machinist rebuild the motor. And after the swap was complete I swapped in a 307 rear end and speedo. With this setup I found that it would do over 30 mph on the highway.

Later as my kids left the nest I sold along the cars that would sell...both of my 240s sold.

And now in an overall plan to simplify my life the 240 comes back.

Who says you can't go home?

So I went over and picked it up. Tomorrow I will spend some time seeing what needs to be done.

Congratulations Tom. What a great story.

However, if you go 30 mph on the highway out here, you'll get run over.

The brakes seem fine, now but the clutch may need bleeding. There is a pretty new looking blaupaundt radio cassette in there too. I am needing a trunk lid, anybody got a good one not too far from Lafayette?

So I borrowed the body jack from my indie today and pushed out the rr taillight area enough to get a taillight in. Of course I have three excellent lr taillights and one rr that is junk.

The front left bumper shock is pushed back about 2" so I will need to send it to the frame shop to pull that back out.

anybody have a lr taillight?

OH man the motor in this babe is lovely!

Can't go Home Again

That was Thomas Wolfe, who said that ........ and the reason he said it was because he wrote "Look Homeward Angel" without bothering to disguise the characters - the folks he knew in Asheville, NC - and made everybody mad, so HE couldn't go home any more.

MB content -- none, so sorry.

I hope the car works out well, Tom.

I kindof took a bath when I sold it for $4,500. What with all the rebuilt stuff I probably had 7k in it. We did use it for two or three years, though.

Bought it back for $1K. It will need from $1 to 2k in repairs but then should be pretty sweet with fresh paint and a working AC. Mechanically it is really nice. I had put fresh bilsteins and michelins on it and redid the front end. The mich have more than half tread left. I think only between 20 and 30k on the rebuild.

Although the body is a little rough it still has the factory paint.

So I feel I am in a good position on it.

Feels good to have a 240 around again, especially one with a fresh 300 motor in it.

The first two pic on the left are the newly reacquired 240/300d and the third one is my 280e euro dedicated ralley car showing (hopefully) the low down nasty stance. The fourth and fifth pics are the 240/300 again.

I saw one identical to your car with the same damage on my CL yesterday. I'm going to try to find the photos in my cache since the ad is gone.

I added two more of the 240/300.

Oh and after talking to a paint and body man I have revised up the figure for repairs to between 2 and 3k.

Good job Tom..!
They say if you love something set it free, if it comes back it was meant to be yours forever...

I had a friend of mine about ten years ago who within a 10 year period of time bought back, and re-sold the same AMC Javellin a good half dozen times, until he finally was thoroughly convinced enough that he still has it today. Now he calls everyone who he had sold it to, and bought it back from his former "Tenants", instead of previous owners and such...
