Vaccum control valve cleaning Q

This is the VCV, right? At the back of it (framed in the pic by some throttle linkage) there's some crud on it. I'm guessing it might be white lithium grease from when I cleaned/added some to the throttle linkage sections. Can I just clean it off with a wire brush and some simple green, or am I asking for trouble? Or is it worse than just gunk and I new a new one? TIA
