Some random W210 musings...

What's up with the funky bolts holding the water pump on? What kind of socket fits them - a star?

Just discovered something cool the car does! When the mirror adjust selector is set on the passenger side and the gear selector is placed in R, the mirror will move in/down to make it easier to see when backing. Then it returns to normal when moving forward.

Oh yeah, how do you remove the pipe coming from the IC to the intake manifold? I can see easily how to remove the manifold bolts but not how to remove the tube from the manifold.

And another thing. What's up with the car falling on it's face after every shift? And the HUGE delay between input on the throttle and response. I can floor it and it waits literally 2 sec before racing off like a bat. Is the computer waiting to see a little boost before it opens the gate on the fuel?

Most folks get the bolt off the IC/EGR to IM from beneath with a long extension.

Most of us talk about 1 sec turbo lag, not 2. The shift delay/rpm drop is to protect the trans.

There are lots of those reverse torx bolt heads (at least that's what I call them) on the car. I use a 12 point socket to get them off in most cases it works fine but you can buy a special set of sockets made for them if you have one that is particularly tight. I remember they were on the thermostat housing and a 12 point worked fine there.

If you experience 2 seconds between stepping on the pedal and the car moving you have a problem. Mine will move right off the line, but until the tach hits about 2K-2.5K the turbo is weak...then it snaps in and you can really feel it go, especially with the A/C compressor off. If yours is doggy make sure you are not driving it in winter mode...that will start it in second gear and really hurt your off the line performance.

ditto what Terry and Marty mentioned...........you are experiencing typical diesel lag compounded with turbo lag. You just need to anticipate and rev her up sooner before you leave the ramp and pull out onto the highway in front of a barreling 18 wheeler.......!

Thanks for the replies! In the latest news, the heat has never worked in the couple months I've had the car (not that I've needed it). This morning I got a "coolant low" warning. Never seen that before so I checked and it looked OK. I'm on the road later and HOLY COW, it's putting out some heat!

I don't know what happened, if there was a bubble or what it was but it's working perfect now.

One other thing. Is the car supposed to make a sound when locking it with the key fob? It never has before today and I thought I heard a weak "bleat" from the car when I locked and unlocked it. Didn't hear it again though...

There is a vacuum pump (in the trunk I believe) that activates when you lock and unlock it but it is nearly silent. If you hear a noise it usually means you either have a leak somewhere or the pump may be getting squeaky. Normally they make almost no noise.

So there's not supposed to be any kind of signal noise when you lock or unlock it? I SWEAR it honked when I unlocked it today - honest! Now, I know what you're talking about with the vacuum pump because I do hear a mewwing sound from the back when I lock or unlock it but that may just be the stray cats in the trunk...

Unless there is a setting that turns on such a signal which I do not know about, then no, the car should not make any noise upon locking or unlocking the doors...I haven't studied the manual but none of my MBs have ever made the lock signal that some car makers feel is necessary to confirm the lock as worked.
