Speedometer/Tach repair shop

Guys and Gals,

This place is in Richardson TX. I have used them before on other vehicles, but notthe MB yet. I called them because if my trip odo not working.

I was quoted $150+tax if I bring on the speedo cluster to fix it, and that includes replacing all the gears in the odo and trip odo, cleaning and lubing the speed indicator.

Here is there website: http://www.zepco.com/index.html

They also do custom work, like when you do a tanny or diff swap, they can source out gearing so that you can sill use your original speedo. They have the stationary rollers for the testing like the smog test people use.

I'll fix your trip odometer for $40 if you send it to me. It's a very simple fix. I've done a few with great success. There is no need to replace all the gears. Do a search, you can easily fix it yourself.

Sounds good. I need some down time for the car, since it is my daily driver. If I drop it off to Zepco in the morning, I can pick it up in the afternoon.

If I buy the '77 300D, I'll send that one to you. It's ODO and Trip ODO are not working either.

RR, you don't want to do it yourself?
it's really pretty simple, the hard part is pulling out the cluster.
once it's out, if you are carefull, you can do it in 15 minutes...
don't follow dieselgiant's site instructions, do a google search of this site for odometer repair, you will find the thread where we explain the simple way to fix it for good with a pair of vice grips.

I was looking at Diesel Giant's site.

I do not know if I want do the trip ODO myself. I also do model railroading, and I have this keen ability to lose the small but usually most important parts like gears, springs screws, etc.

Mr. Murphy seems to always look over my shoulder.

Diesel Giant's how to on the odo is great for identifying the problem, but his way to fix it is not the best way IMO. You do not need to disassemble anything really. Just pull the shaft out 1/8", knurl the shaft where it matters with a cutter (increase diameter), tap it back in and you're done. Takes less than 2 minutes literally if done right.

Oh, cool. What about the trip ODO that likes to stop at 99.9 each time?

Can't help you there since I didn't have that problem. While you have it out, take a chop stick, shave one end square to fit the drive, spin by hand to find correct direction, then drive it with a drill to diagnose the problem. I don't think it will be too difficult.

Here the thread where I posted how I fixed my odometer. Wow that was Jan 06, one of first repairs I did to the Mercedes I think.

Naah, save some $$$ and DIY. It is really easy. Or at least tell the shop you'll only pay them $40 and see if they'd go for it. Print this
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=143331
and bring it to them and ask them to do it in front of you. Tell them it should take less than 5 minutes and that it'll be the quickest $40 they'll make.

Sounds great! I now need to find a speedo head from an '85 300D so I can do the diff swap. It appears MB regeared the speedo instead of just using a differnent gear in the tranny.

But then the mileage reading would be wrong. You should send it to me. I'll do it for $30. Besides, I think I came up with the knurling the shaft idea. If you don't think so, post the thread describing such a fix dated before Jan 06 and I'll eat my words.
