Question on upper oil pan gasket and rear main seal
I was told today that the upper oil pan gasket is only an RTV type sealant. What is the right sealant to use? Also would you replace a rear main seal if it's not leaking but as a PM item while the engine is out? Thanks for the advice.

yes, RTV sealant, available at your local MB stealership for about $15/tube. Similar to permatex black, but I'd use the MB since it should hold for the next 300K miles or so. If it's hot out which if you're pretty much anywhere in the US right now it is, you need to work fast. You don't wait for it to tack and it will tack quickly.
Replace the rear main seal as per the FSM. It costs something like $2 so no reason not to.
