Tank empty? Rig up an alternative fuel source and give it a try. Blow some air back thru the fuel lines. Reverse the feed and return lines. All possible courses of action.

we put in new inline fuel filter . got diesel in the filter it sucked it out and its only half way full.we cannot get fuel to the inline filter. the can filter is full. when we push the primer pump it squirts out onto ground. the local parts store said there is a transfer pump is there one and where do we find it?

before there was a clicking sound on the right side of the car it clicked 3 individual times and then the car fired up . that clicking sound has left and ever since the car will not fire. the glow plug light comes on a goes off as it should. the starter engages and turns as should the solenoid clicks when key is turned on. cannot find a vaccumm leak that we can find no fuel leaks that we can find. we have be turning in circles now for 5 days and still no answers
please if you can help or have any ideas they would be greatly appreciated. we have a 1984 300d drove it for 3 years and never had this kind of problem. this is our only drivable car and we need ideas thanks so much

You need to replace the primer pump as a minimum. The old screw type ones leak. Report back after replacement. Next step would be to supply an alternative fuel source (diesel in a coke bottle) to the in-line filter.

Ok, first off, vacuum does not control the fuel. It does control the fuel shut off valve.

Where is the fuel squirting in relation to the primer pump? Have you replaced the spin on filter as well? Also, how are the fuel lines toward the tank. They can split and allow air into the fuel system. It sounds like it is pulling fuel, but air is preventing it to start due to too little fuel reaching the combustion chamber.

glow plugs?? even if they're all bad except for number one, i think the dashboard glow indicator will still light up (only if glow plug 1 still works).....but you're not getting it started with only 1 plug me thinks? can anyone confirm this please?

I believe the dash light will go off if either #1 is dead or any two GPs are dead, at least on my 82. In any case, I would check them all and make sure they are getting power.
