If it is a mechanical thing, I have had luck in the past with graphite. Get a tube and squirt it in the key slot then work the key in and out and turn it back and forth. Some times the tumblers get stuck.

Rock your wheel back and forth as you try and rotate your key. I am not a proponent of graphite in these ignition cylinders.

Can you get to the point where the glow plugs are energized? If so, then start it by jumping the wires at the junction box on the passenger inner fender well.
You need to replace the key switch.

From what I've read on here, replacing the key switch can be a big headache once the tumbler becomes stuck. I wouldn't turn the thing anymore until I had a replacement on hand. Leave it in the on position, start the car by jumping the wires, stop it with the stop lever and disconnect the battery between uses.
I assume a key switch is available from Phil at the BuyParts link at the top of this page.

Judging by the fact he has no problem turning the key up to the point of cranking the starter, I don't think the tumbler or steering lock is to blame here, or else it'd be happening at any position, it sounds to me more like the starting detents inside the electrical part of the switch have balled up and maybe gotten mashed. I'd pull apart the switch and see if the tumbler rotates properly with the switch part removed. (undo your battery first though)
