Metric Motors

Well I finally got my new engine from metric Motors. ordered it July 20,
there was a delay on the new IP. seems the 85 has a little box thingy
with a wire coming out the back side of it, it`s a rack positioner something
or other.
We left Wed morning @ 2:50am, got down to LA about 9:30am. It was 348 miles one way. no traffic @ 3am, but when we got on the 405 in LA,
stopped traffic due to a wreck. there was one real short car in the pile up.

Metric Motors is one first class place. they know what they are doing with
building MB engines. that`s all they do. It`s a huge place not some hole in the wall place. there were piles of valve covers up on one shelf & under
that was a shelf with tubes with all kinds of cam shafts. engine block lined
up on the floor, and crank shafts in another area. and largest pile of heads
I have ever seen in a stack ready for the next phase of machining. on the
other side is the machine shop area with all the up to date equipment for
grinding, milling etc...

I arrive with my boat anchor in the back of the PU, and there in the door
way to the shop was my new baby all wraped in plastic shrinkwrap.
wow!!! does it look nice, all pretty and nice w/o all that nasty oil and grime all over it. I met Mike the owner of the place, and he is first class to
do business with, and will work with you.

so what we picked up is a 617.952 long block. $5950.00 minus 10% since
Iam putting it in my self. gave me the shop price. plus a $400.00 core chg. will get this back if the old eng. checks out. also picked up a new
vacuum pump from them. you get a 4yr 50000 mile warranty. comes with
injectors, IP, glow plugs, and oil pan. my valve cover was cracked, so they gave me a new one. plus the lower turbo drain tube and dip stick
tube mounted.
We drive out of there $6000.00 lighter, but if I get the $400 back, It will
come to $5600.00. not too bad.

we finally get home @ 9: 35pm. sure was a long day. 704 miles. but
worth it.

They were just finishing up on a SDL motor for some one. didn`t ask
how much though.

I am curious, Metric has the crankshaft reground. I thought you shouldn't regrind a crankshaft because it it harden?.?.?

Quote from Metric http://www.mercedesengines.net/proddetail.asp?prod=300SDTURBO%28617%2978%2D85LB

"Block machined to exacting factory specs. Bore and hone cylinders, surface deck. Connecting rods reconditioned, Reground and balanced crankshaft assembly. Cylinder Head is completely remachined including pressure test, resurface, cut seats, hone new guides to size. New valve guides, New valves, New valve springs, New rocker arms, New ball stud adj., New hydraulic lifters, New camshafts (on all V8 & Hyd. Lifter Engines), reground & hardened camshafts (on earlier mechanical type)."

It can be reground but only down to a specific thickness before it needs a new nitride hardening bath.

There are specific tests in the FSM that outline if a crank can be reused or reground.

Good story about the visit to Metric.

I too have heard they are an excellent place to get a new Mercedes engine if you need one. This further confirms the good stories about them.

Yeah Iam on the left coast, but in this case Iam on the right coast.
Sure sorry I missed Paris Hilton when I was down there. Yeah right.

IAMBROKE... well I guess you could check in an engine when you fly home,
just as long as it`s the proper size carry on and fits in the overhead.

don`t know what shipping would be to east, but that did help me on some
cost. I know it would have cost more than the drive down there. then the
hassle of boxing up my engine to send back

when I first called Metric, I told Mike my valve cover was broken from the
chain when it cut loose. he said I`ll work with you on that. and I have to
remove my block heater, said not to worry about it, we have them. it was
all part of the package I guess. plus a few things I mentioned in the post
above.

I called a place in Fresno, Ca. that plates engine parts. I thought about
doing the exhaust manifold. the cost would be around $150 plus the
shipping. they say it will lower some of the heat under the hood & make
things flow better. like to do it now while every thing is off & the eng. is
sitting in front of me. It`s so much fun standing on my head trying to
remove the manifolds/turbo when installed..
I would like to do the intake/exhaust turbo and valve cover, but later
for now. I have a few more expences facing me before this job is complete
the web site is www.capsbhc.com .

I`ll have some pictures coming up, got to get them developed and put
on dics at Costco. don`t have a digital yet, sooooon.

If I ever need to do my head I'm going to Metric. No queston about it. The $200 I will spend on shipping is worth it.

The head weighs 65 lb. You can ship it for $65.00. Metric can ship it back to you for considerably less.

I wonder what a crate engine would cost to ship?

That's a different deal altogether. Figure the engine weight is about 800 lb. on a skid. A typical LTL might get $300. or so if Metric has a "contract" with them.

Without a contract, it's prohibitive for you to ship the engine to them.

Yeah, I'd have to eat the core. Since I don't work at the marina anymore shipping one out would be a big problem.

I could probably get a better deal from the dealer. Just for fun you should price out a short and long block, at your special pricing.

It's still has to be cheaper than driving half way across the country. Once you're into the project for about $8K, an extra few $100 won't make much difference.
