What is the difference between gross and curb weight?

I was wondering how much my 1991 300d weighs. I see the numbers by the door, which from memory, there are 2 sets, and they are different. I think one says 4400 lbs.

I did a search on the internet, same thing, it gives gross weight and curb weight, which are like, 600 pounds different from each other. I think one says 3850, the other 4400. What's the deal?

Thanks,

Jeff

Gross weight is the total weight with all passengers, fuel, luggage and cargo.
Curb weight is the actual weight with all the fluids and no driver.

So, it doesn't have anything to do with the appearance of the passengers?

According to these guys, the (curb) weight of your car is 3390 pounds:

Figuring out curb weight is easy. Take the gross weight and subtract the maximum loading capacity (typically around 850 lbs).

4400 is probably the gross vehicle weight, while 3850 is the kerb/curb weight. Difference is the load capacity of the five passengers and cargo. I think it's also indicated how much the passenger weight capacity is.

Passenger appearance is related to curb wait.

The worse they look, the longer they have to wait on the curb.

"curb weight", the weight with normal fluids and equipment and without passengers and cargo, is around 3390lbs. Gross weight (GVWR) or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum that the car is designed to weigh fully loaded, and is listed on the data plate in the driver's doorjamb/B-pillar.
