tranny question and more....
Slightly confused as to tranny issue.here goes...
been following the tranny thread here and decided to see if I could fix the shifting issue I have.hooked up gauge and checked vacuum....about fifteen at idle.since it was shifting hard i bumped it up until shifting was smooth.worked well but unfotunately the final shift(4th?) still clunks pretty harshly.right now vcv(? top of IP) is set to about 23lbs vacuum.the line to tranny holds vacuum.what would cause that final shift to be so harsh?and why after just a few minutes of driving does it go away? also.... Having never ridden in a 300D until I bought one I have no baseline comparison for things like ride height, highway vibrations etc. So here is my question regarding that.I will be in the DC area from the 19th to the 23rd of this month and was wondering if there was anyone in the DC area that feels that their 300D turbo is in good mechanical shape and would be willing to take me for a ride so that I can have a comparison to mine.If so please send me an email with a way to contact you upon arrival in DC.thanks very much |
no help on the tranny issue, huh
AND I guess no one is willing to take me for a drive in their car. |
redbreath,
I think these trannys take a minute to warm up. when was fluid and filter last done? this would be a good place to begin. is your EGR disabled? if not, search a bit...you want to eliminate this pesky system as a variable pronto. does the modulator itself hold vacuum? 23mmHg sounds high to me. The max I can get on mine is 16 mmHg at idle on the tranny line. My master brake line sits at 23 mmHg. If you are ever in the Boston area Id be happy to take you for a ride in my 300D. I don't have a lot of time in other 300D's, but it should drive nicely on the highway. It shouldn't vibrate much at all...I imagine its what driving a tank at 65mph would feel like. Ride height can be determined by the camber (slant) of your back wheels. Take a few pics of your car at different angles and post them. Folks will be able to tell you if you are looking ok. Especially take a picture of the rear wheel from about 15' from the back of the car on a flat surface. dd |

fluid and filter less than one year old.no egr connected for about same amount of time.Master brake line sits at a solid 25mmHG and I dont think that modulator holds vacuum.not sure though. As to warming up,It doesnt seem likely that it is the cause.though it is curious that it stops after just a bit of driving.fluid level is correct.any other thoughts..... |
no one has any insight as to the tranny issue?been following sams thread and this issue has not been addressed there........anyone.....HELLO!
|
surprised at the lack of assistance here.considering the amount of eyeballs that have looked here(over 100 people).thanks so much for all the usefull info.I guess you guys are more interested in three word stories, and useless banter about how right you are and how wrong someone else is.such a helpful group, but only if one is demure enough.I have always said thank you and used pleases.so helpful.

I hate to add to any flame wars, but in our defense, some of us read the title, and click it, only to find that we don't have anything to do with that model.
Myself, I only have a SD, and little experience with the transmission. I looked hoping to find more info, as I am still troubleshooting mine. Best of luck in all your wrenching persuits! |

counter clockwise = softer shift, clockwise = firmer shift adjust in small amounts then test drive. put rubber cap back on every time you adjust don't insult members of the board:mad: be patient for answeres, we don't get paid to post help I hope this helps you :D Steve |

As to insulting members,I was not insulting only direct and to the point.I have always been courteous until something else is required. No one has any problem being "unkind" to their fellow member(ME) whenever they see fit.I post any help that I can freely and without feeling as though I am doing some social service.whether someone uses it or not is up to them.Since receiving advice is mostly subjective as to its efficacy, I feel well within my right to be disappointed when Zero assistance is given.Especially when I read the "I am right, and you are wrong" posts that seem to be very common.I am not asking to be invited to your house or share a meal, only for the insights that all the "experts"(self proclaimed) give so freely to pretty much everyone else.with over 100 people(patient enough for you,or should i have waited until 2 or 3 hundred people had looked without a word?) reading the above post, odds are that more than one person with some prior experience with this problem had read the post, and could not be bothered or have any desire(for whatever reason) to post a response. As I said before I would help anyone of you with a problem you had if it was something that I could do.apparently we do not all share the same desire to be helpful of people in need, in spite of all the opinions that get posted on this site.If I insulted your delicate egos, well so be it.I was not rude or crass in what i wrote previously.so please spare me the holier than thou attitude regarding "insulting members".It really is only appropriate when it applied across the board and not only as the board members see fit. From day one here I have been attacked and flamed by the experts.sometimes in spite of themselves they have given help. |
I can understand the frustration in not getting answers, but you shouldn't get mad because someone won't help you. Help is help, you're not entitled to it. The only people here who owe anything are the people who have gotten help (like me). People giving help freely are free to decide when to give it.
I wish I could help you out, as I just dealt with a PITA tranny problem, but I don't know what your answer is. Good luck with it, and I hope you get it solved. |

Not really getting mad.just frustrated. Not an entitlement issue, thus the pleases and thank you's.but last time i checked this was a "help" forum for the most part.So a reasonable amount of expectation seems appropriate.only frustrated because of the lack thereof. |
You've got to look deep and hard
Rebreath- It is a difficult question. Automatic transmissions always have been and I think always will be difficult to work on. I know a good many qualified mechanics that just won't mess with them. And I think most of the people on this forum are not qualified mechanics, and so answers can be hard to come by. But really friend, did you search the archives at all for an answer. There is so much to that vacuum system that we just don't see at first. And so much has been written in the past by members who I feel have become tired of answering questions. So I did a quick search in the search box on "transmission vacuum adjustments" and I came up with a huge list of them. Here is one that might really be worthy of a good read for you. I read it through a year or so ago and made a good mental note of where I could find it when I needed it, and so I will pass it on too you. This member, Samuel R. Ross, has really gone through this vacuum set up. Here is the thread, and I would think that if you follow it through you will solve your shifting problem. Best of luck in solving your problem. Remember," you'll catch a lot more flies with sugar then with vinegar".

That thread(sams,as mentioned above) is the only thread that I actually subscribe too.IE-every time someone posts to it,a copy comes to me also.read the entire thing and will continue to read what ever gets added to it.I definitely understand the depth of the subject.Though i do not recall reading about something like my particular problem. But i will continue to try and figure it out.I will also read sams thread again! maybe I missed some mention of something similar.research is not something that I have a problem with.and as to the sugar /vinegar comparison......It seems to me that piles of crap attract even more than sugar or vinegar. As I said before,it is "supposed" to be a help forum! Not a "you did not kiss my ass right to get an answer" forum! |
If you make it to central Virginia, I'll be happy to drive you around in both cars. Have you adjusted the Bowden cable? That helped me with shifting problems on the SD. Backed out 6?mm, I think.
