I have a 1982 300TD with 195000 miles. Yesterday I was trying to use the cruise control and it surged about 3 to 4 mile per hour then after about 1 mile it starts to drop speed. You can feel the car accelerate and decelerate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They often refer to the actuator and amplifier as the primary problems with the cruise. My switch in the combination switch was the culpret in my car. My car would surge (Actually resume) back to speed. It behaved erratically starting for no reason and cutting out without warning. It was scary to have a 4000 lb machine take off for no reason. I could handle it but I would not let any else drive my baby. ( Now that I fixed it I still don't)

I took out my switch and was prepared to clean it but the switch is sealed and to clean the contacts involved breaking it so i sprayed it with liquid wrench to see if it could work its way in there and clean it up some. It helped but did not cure the problem. So i bought a new switch at MB for $55.

Now I am belief that it is not a bad idea to replace all the parts that could be involved with the problem. In other words if I bought the switch and it did not fix the problem i would not be upset as it was the cheapest possible solution. I have been wrong before and have a good tolerance for it. You may not.... and thats OK

If spray cleaning solvent into the switch helps i would think that is sufficient efivdence for it being the problem.
One thing to consider. Disconnect the switch unit underneath the steering wheel as your car may decide to runaway without notice. Now i could control the car but my wife or teenage child might not.

good luck

bob
