Hail Storm!!!

Yeah I got stuck in the middle of a hail storm today spitting out baseball sized hail... my windshield is toast and I have 5 large hail dents on my car. I pulled under a bridge to get away from it but some a-hole cop made me move. Anyway, does anybody know if there is a good site to purchase a cheap windshield, or is the shipping just too expensive. I wish I had full coverage, but I don't.

I'e gotten windshields for about $250 (installed) from the local auto glass place. To get one much cheaper, you will have to check the junkyards. I've had good luck with "dent doctor" type repairs for less than $100 per dent.

yeesh, less than 100 still sounds a little steep, i recounted and I have about 10 dents, paid 1800 for the car, 10 dents and a windshield costing about a grand doesn't really seem worth it. Its too bad my luck had to run out today...:grim:

I'm surprised the cop made you move. Were you out of the travel lane(s)?

Pulling over under a bridge is standard practice around here where room provides for it. In hail storms cars do that, and in rain storms motorcycles pull under a bridge so the riders can put on rain suits.

Cops are a lot more arrogant these days than when I was a kid. I know people are more arrogant back to them, but I don't understand why the attitude has to start with the cop first, regardless of who is being approached. The other thing that goes on now in Virginia is that the state police are always assigned duty away from their home region. I presume this helps to disconnect them from the community they patrol so they feel less pressure to treat people nicely.

Check around for the dents and see if you can get a better deal, I only had a couple done, so I may have paid more per dent.

Put your hood up and tell john law that you're having engine trouble. He'll soon look for someone new to hassle.

Free windshields

Check your insurance, they usually cover windshields, and it doesn't count against your insurance payout record.

Glass is covered under "comprehensive" insurance (fire, theft, etc.), usually no deductible.

He doesn't have full coverage so I doubt that'll help.

A lot of times it isn't economical to get full coverage on these old cars. The insurance company will total the car pretty easily and you won't get your money back from several years of coverage.

To me it seems a challenging job, but you could always try finding one in a junkyard and pulling it yourself. Obviously need a pickup and some wood props. I can't see a junkyard charging very much for a windshield as it would be well used and pitted.

maybe the dry ice trick will work on the dents

How's that supposed to work?

Nordon 08-21-2007 01:17 AM

sorry, i didn't abandon this, somehow i'm not subscribed to the post like i thought.

"I'm surprised the cop made you move. Were you out of the travel lane(s)?"

Well, I wasn't, i was in the right lane, but the only traffic that was moving was him. Nobody else on the interstate was moving, and there was still a driving lane open. I understand its illegal or whatever, but seriously, where's the humanity anymore? It's exactly as Ken put it, it always seems the cop starts it anymore. Especially highway patrol, I understand the necessity of city cops, but highway patrol are supposed to be there to help, and it seems like they are just there for a power trip. Sorry, tangent.

"A lot of times it isn't economical to get full coverage on these old cars"

Yeah, I've actually checked it out, I can get liability for 25 dollars a month, and full coverage for about 125 a month. Beings how I have had my car a year, I saved 1200 dollars already on liability on a car I paid 1800 for. Its not even worth it to get the dents repaired, however I will try the dry ice thing. It won't hurt to try. I also heard about some cheap 20 dollar apparatus that you can buy to pull out the dents yourself. Considering the worst dents are on the hood, they are pretty accessible.

I have an appointment to get a new windshield installed for 170 + tax. I can live with that. I still cringe though at the dents every time i walk past my car.:bigcry:

Holy cats Nordon! What did you do to rate such high comprehensive rates on your insurance? I'm paying $65/month in a state run by the insurance companies in an area certainly not known for safe or intelligent drivers.

Hit up your yellow pages and call every glass place in the area!

The one here with a full page ad "we will not be undersold" wanted $410 to replace the one in my 190, I found it for $185 cash installed at my house with a year install warranty (they install a new one for free if it gets a chip, I only pay the $90 for the glass).
