I'm running a 240D radiator with my turbo 617 and it seems to have enough cooling capacity. When my thermostat failed open last year it would never get up to opperating temp, except for going up very long hills with the foot to the floor.

Now my replacement thermostat seems to be going and the car is running hot.

My radiator was rebuilt. Believe me, I've been through this cooling system and found nothing deficient. If I go up the to the mountains at highway speeds, or cruise fast in 95F+ weather, my temperature creeps up. I've come close to 100C.

I've been told to use the turbo radiator and expansion tank, but now it sounds as though I could be missing something if others have used the n/a radiator on the turbo engine with no trouble.....

explains it perfectly. gota love it when your on a freeway with four lanes of traffic and your going 70 and all of a sudden you slow down to 15 mph, and there is NOTHING AHEAD, and all of a sudden your going 70 again.

Have you tried removing the T-stat for a test?

What would that prove?

They will not cool properly without it.

No, but if it the engine never reaches operating temperature the radiator must have enough cooling capacity for the engine. I guess the total lack of thermostat would cause more flow to the radiator than an open thermostat, but it should give a good indication if the radiator is the problem or something else.

Not on a Mercedes. Mercedes uses bypass systems. On the typical old US engine, the 'natural' flow of the water was thru the block and radiator. The thermostat blocked this flow until it opened. On a Mercedes the 'natural' flow is just recirculating thru the block, when the engine gets hot enough, the thermostat 'bypasses' the natural flow and forces coolant into the radiator. Hence removing the thermostat in our Mercedes will not cause more flow to the radiator.

Hmmm... So when my thermostat failed and my car was running too cool all of the coolant was running to the radiator? Too bad I chucked it, I could have used it for testing purposes.

In my defense this is the first watercooled car I have owned.

I've tried a few different thermostats, and some work better than others. My OEM stat stamped "Made in Germany" seems to work the best, but I still don't seem to have enough cooling capacity.
