Turbo wastegate vacuum or pressure

I was in the middle of rebuilding my turbo. Guy sent wrong kit, but I notice the wastegate linkage when hooked up the spring in the waste gate actuator allows about 1/2 inch of opening to the exhaust when at rest. Should it not be closed at rest? or when the engine runs does it close. I always thought the waste gate opened under a certain pressure. It is not vacuum contoled right? If this is the case, is there pressure at idle that will close this waste gate or do I have to adjust the linkage for it to close at rest.

The wastegate should be closed with no pressure to the actuator.

Should it be closed off of the engine? Or with the engine idling? Should it only open at at certain PSI or is it vaccum controled?

Vac wastegate or not, any wastegate SHOULD be closed under idle conditions till the set PSI is reached to open the wastegate. I've never heard of a vacuum controlled wastegate. when you're boosting..where's the vacuum coming from?

I have a similar problem. I bet if I looked inside my turbo right now, I'd see a gap between the valve and the valve seat....are wastegate rebuild kits available?

The 90-92 2.5 in the 300D uses Vacuum to close the waste gate. All under computer control. If you put pressure on it you will get no boost, however if you put vacuum you will get boost.

Thanks for the info..........I had a suspicion that the vehicle used a vacuum wastegate.

All you fellows with the older vehicles don't have this system and it's totally foreign to you..........so............please don't post on this thread.

Dunnow. I was thinking W123 and forgot to check his signature.

I vote we have a early and late diesel section.

That was what was screwing me up. Most of the time, psi runs the wastegate. But after looking at this thing, It wasn't acting right. This is a first for me. I'll pull a vacuum on it and see that it closes. Sort of a relief. Wonder if I was going crazy.
