Flushing Out Oil Cooler

OK I was searching out this answer, but don`t find what I was looking for.
I have an old mechanic friend that has a yard full of old MB round bodies,
108 coupe, Adendouer (sp) and so on. been a MB mech for a long time.

He advised to have the oil cooler sent in to a shop and have it flushed out
since I have the new eng and there could be stuff in the cooler that
could posibly flow through the system and damage some bearings and so
fourth. especially if there was some sort of eng damage, & I had the timing chain come apart.

Pacific Oil Cooler in La Verne, Ca www.oilcoolers.com is the place he uses
I called them, they have a 5 - 7 day turn around, and a $100.00 charge.
this place is FAA certified. they flush, back flush, pressure test. the
person I talked to said it is quite a process.

If nothing else, there is some good reading here on coolers.

maybe this is overkill, Iam not sure. a new cooler is around $300.00.

The question is not so much what a new oil cooler costs. How much does a replacement engine cost?

This is true. I was looking through the searches to see if anything was
posted about doing it. I don`t see anyone ever bringing this subject up.

I wasn`t complaining about the cost of the flush, or the price of a new
oil cooler. I know fully well the price of the new engine.

I see threads on the right kind of oil, and that goes on for 15 pages.
air filters, heaven forbid change that. and the list goes on.

I didn`t think about flushing the cooler, but then also what about the oil
filter housing. do we take the thermostat out and springs and valves and
whatever is in there also?

something I got @ Metric Motors said to change the thermostat each overhaul. something else to ponder on.

Here's a pciture of the oil cooler from my manual.. hot oil goes out port A, through the cooler, then cooled oil goes in port B and through the oil filter before it hits any bearings, etc.

What kinds of contaminants are you thinking are in that cooler that the filter won't remove?

There are plenty of stories in the aviation world of engines being replaced after "eating" themselves, but the oil cooler gets left bolted to the firewall, untouched. Then the oil cooler, which is full of metal chips, ruins the new engine in short order.

The 617 engine, however, is at a distinct advantage over most aircraft engines in that the oil flows from the cooler directy into the filter housing prior to entering oil galleries. That reduces the risk factor considerably.

Thanks for the picture, I do have the MB shop manuals and have read
how this complicated filter housing works, and the oil system. a lot of
thought went into the design many yrs ago. I know the oil from the cooler
flows through the filter first.
I just wanted to ask if flushing was something any one did. my MB mechanic friend is also a Porscha mechanic, and had bearings damaged
because of contaminates in the cooler. the Porscha might be like the VW
with just a screen, I don`t know. and having that happen to him, he might
be a little gun shy.

Aircraft coolers work in the samy way, but are under a lot more stress
than any vehicle.
