Synthetic Oil - Mobil 1 10W40 CF
 

I know many here use Mobil 1 5W40. Has anyone used the 10W40 grade on their D's? Is this just a heavier version of the 5W40?

Since its CF rated it must be ok with the D's. right?

The Mobil 1 10W40 is more of a gasser oil.

Is "CF" a rating that was acceptable for Mercedes diesels :confused:

If you really wanna get picky, CF4 is probably closer to the right stuff. Plain CF is minimally acceptable for diesels, although it is, of course, better than the CC or CD oil available in the 70's. This whole thing is kind of in limbo at the moment, as the feds are limiting phosphorus and zinc in the oil (addatives which help prevent camshaft wear). Also, the test equipment to actually certify oils for some of those old specifications is no longer made, so it could get interesting trying to find suitable oil just going by the ratings. At the moment, I look for CF4 and / or CG4, however that could change in the near future.

I don't know what car OP is trying to acquire oil for. If it's one of the early '80's diesels, I'd be looking for something far more robust (ability to suspend soot) than a CF oil.

OP: Why not continue use of the Rotella syn you're already using or step up to the M1 Turbodiesel Truck easily found at Wall'smart for $23/gallon :confused:

Who's OP:D You got me there UB. I did pick up some M1 10W40 from WM cuz it was on sale for $19 for the 5qt container. The API guidelines do say CF is ok for diesels:

"Introduced in 1994. For off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulfur. Can be used in place of CD oils."

Toby, there are superior choices. That's my main point. Why not use Rotella syn as you indicate in your signature?

I follow you there, UB. Just wondering. Mobil 1 seems to carry a good name. Partly wondering if its better than Rotella Syn.
