w123 om617 body shakes at idle but engien doesn't?

A buddy of mine has a 1983 300D that at idle the whole car shakes, the washer tank almost want to fall out, looking at the engine I don't see much if any shake. I told him probably the engien shocks are frozen, but wanted some more input,,, anyone?

Perhaps a review of Newton's Third Law of motion is in order!!!

car parked on a fault line?
a REALLY REALLY REALLY out of balance aux fan?

mespe 08-23-2007 12:41 PM

aux fan not running,,, the car shake goes away at throttle above maybe 1000RPM

Put a gloved hand on the valve cover and the other on the fender an see if the shake in unison or opposite of each other. Opposite can give the illusion of body only shake.

I agree with checking motor mounts, tranny mount and engine shocks.

The RD bolt can be a culprit, adjust or replace.

Adjust rack dampener bolt----easiest thing to check first----it's kind of a pita, but I was able to adjust mine and eliminate all of the shaking at idle.

The motor mounts job is to damp vibration. From the description they are no longer functioning properly adn are transmitting vibration to the frame.

The other things mentioned may be the cause of the vibration; or not.
