1979 240D Over Heat Question Please!

Coming home from a pro baseball game last night. On the highway, noticed temp gauge red lined. Pulled over shut down. Noticed the following after cool down.
1. started car to idle
2. coolant level ok, only a little lost out the overflow
3. The compressor, idler and pully on the crank shaft "belt" were not turnining at nearly the same speed as the other two belts.

My huntch which might be lousy is that the AC compressor clutch might be stuck or froze. Was idling with heat on and ac off to check AC works though. when turned on.

Could this restriction cause the water pump drive belt pull from the crankshaft to go slower thus causing over heating?

Water pump changed out aroun 10K miles ago. Thoughts please/Tom
