Question Sunroof on 79 300d was working now nothing???

Hi Everyone,

My electric sunroof was working perfectly and now suddenly, when I push the sunroof button nothing happens...no motor sounds nothing! I searched the sunroof threads but didn't see a problem quite like this one. I checked the fuse it was fine...any ideas?

Thanks very much!

Replace the fuse regardless of how it looks or tests. Corrosion will build up at the contact points at either end causing it to not transfer power. Use copper or brass element fuses, not the grey metal type. Report back.

Nah, dont tell the guy to check something he's already done and then "report back later" for christs sake.

Smitty, check the switch before attacking the motor. Same as bosch window switches, bosch sunroof switches are suspect. Pulling loose the panel that holds sunroof switch on '79 300D is easy - use wooden popsicle stick under the *bottom* portion of zebrano faceplate approx couple of inches from both ends to pry upwards. The face plate lifts forward and up from the bottom.

Then try hosing the switch with electric parts cleaner. Hell, you can do this without pulling the faceplate if you want. And if cleaning the switch doesnt work, experiment with shorting the wires in sunroof switch socket to make the sunroof work after pulling the switch from the faceplate.

I would first make sure the roof actually slides and not jammed or the cable is broken. Manually crank it from the trunk. If it opens up, try the button again. Mine used to close but not open. Check the connector to the motor in the trunk. It’s under the left plastic cover clipped on the wheel well. Then pull out the button, open it up and clean the contacts.

Mostly its the Switches that need cleaned or replaced, they will wear out before anything else.

Thumbs up You guys rock!

Hey thanks for all the advice guys! I crannked the sunroof open from the trunk and after pushing on the switch got it to intermittantly close. I pulled the switch off my 81 and plugged it in and the sunroof worked perfectly. I am going to see if a good cleaning can get the original switch to work, if not then I'll just look for another one. Im relieved. Thanks!
