Transmission question.

Will the automatic transmission from a 1983 240d work in a 1985 300d?

I believe there are some electronic controls on the 85 not present on the 83.

Yes, it will work but it might not survive long with 2x the power being pushed through it.

You might also have to alter the vacuum system to make the shift firmness right.

No, I believe these are two very different animals. The 85 is a 722.3 or 4xx six bolt transmission and the 240D has a 722.1xx 4 bolt transmission. The guts are totally different.

ah, ok thanks! the reason i was asking was because i have a spare 240d engine laying around from my last engine swap. and i might be buying a 300d here soon so if that tranny ever went out i would have a spare, i would just throw in there for a month.
