Turbo replacement or rebuild

Bought a 91 300d W124 2.5 with Turbo. Found the turbo was locked up. Been that way for a while from the looks of it. Cleaned it up and when to rebuild. Here lies the problem. Bought a rebuild kit from distributor in Kentucky for $50. Began to rebuild. No end carbon seal, thust collar or thrust sleeve. SHeesh. OK Kicked myself and said I should have bought an ebay kit for same money that included all the parts. OK back to distributor. Another $50 and all the parts came. I ask dist to provide a diagram of the turbo breakdown. Said he cant print one out. Called another distributor. No dice, only a parts list. Called Garrett. "Dont call us, call a distributor!" After a long explanation I am now on my 4 person to call me back. No diagrams of it on the web. Some close but none exactly like I have.

Long story shortened. Got my turbo all back together. The exhaust fins are pressed against the housing not allowing it to turn. Must be put together wrong I say. Pulled it appart 3 times and could not find where there is somehing wrong.

So If you guys know of a place to get a breakdown of the little garrett turbo 465445-2, I would appreciate the help. I've got $100 in it but may have to try and find a used one.

Will any of the 3.0 turbos fit a 2.5 or do I does it have to come from a 2.5 engine?

Do you think it could be possible for the fins on the exhaust side to have warped by being in the exhaust not moving for a few years? Seems strange to me.

Thanks for the help.

The turbine fins won't warp just sitting. You might have bent it when pulling it apart, however the turbine is a lot tougher than the compressor. You probably have something backwards or put together wrong.

click on the diagram here for a bigger picture of an exploded view.

Thats what I was thinking, but without the diagram, I cannot check myself. I think I have it all put back correctly. It spins nice and tight. Thats not the diagram of my turbo, but thanks. I have seen this one on gpopshop. I think that is a TB2510. I have been told my is a TB2535. I'll keep looking and hope someone else jumps in. The clearances are probably tight on the exhaust end. I am thinking about adding a shim to pull the fins away from housing. Probably work if I go light on the shimming. Worst case is I dont get full speed of turbo.

Thanks for the diagram. Both of these are what I have seen, but not the same. Most of the major parts are the same however there are some differences in number 8, 13, 16, 18, 28. 29 and maybe others. Some I have seen have a oil defuser and others do not. I guess the 2. 5 are a bit different. MB doesn't even show a breakdown of it. Still waiting on a call from Garrett, but not holding my breath. I've put a shim between the center section and the exhaust housing. That gives me just enought for the turbo fins not to touch. Spins freely with good seal. Going to put it all back this weekend. Going test it before I put the EGR stuff back up. I'll let you guys know. THanks for the help. Got to get this thing running for my son to run back to school 30 miles each way before my gas bill get too high.

The picture may not exactly look like your turbo, however the innards and parts should correspond to similar parts.

Most of the parts are the same, however some internal parts are "extra" for my turbo and some are omitted. Therefore I was hoping the find actual diagram for my turbo. To be sure there isn't something missing. Put turbo on last night. Having trouble lining up oiler lines, hopefully fire it up tonight.
