om617 and auto trans in a 240

Hello, I'm new to the MB scene but have been looking to put my engine and transmission in another vehicle. My 300SD has had a horrifying life and the body belongs in "a better place" but the engine and trans are in good shape with relatively low miles. I have come across a 78 240D with no engine and have not found any posts about putting both engine and transmission in a 4 cylinder body. Has anybody done this.
Thanks
Robert

Yes, its a simple swap. All you need to do is find the driveshaft from an automatic 300D and convert the speedo drive in the tranny from an electric sender to a mechanical cable.

No cutting/welding/etc, its all bolt in and swap out.

I would try for a body that matches the year of your engine if possible. It will make the small things match up better.

Not really. The little differences can be easily adapted.

Depending on the year the differences may be more than little....like the position of the ac compressor.

Isn't the compressor near the alternator on the W123? on the W126 it is near the PS pump on the opposite side. Also the oil filter housing is different between the W123 and W126 plus the W123 does not use the electric gauge. I have a W123 oil filter put aside somewhere if it is needed. I would swap it for the one from a W126

The early 123s had the compressor up high on the right side of the car on a monster bracket. The later cars have it down low on the left. The oil filter setup is the same from 123 to 126 I am pretty certain.

I am not sure the early 123s might have the filter from below like a 115.

Your conversion is going to literly scream for a different rear end ratio.

Youll need to swap motor mount arms for the w123 ones, swap on the w123 oil filter housing, and change the tailhousing on the transmission. Easy stuff really. And some throttle linkage will need to be changed. And youll need new motor mount shocks for the w123. Theyre expensive but not necessary.

Yes you will want the rear end and speedo to match the turbo motor.
