Question Driveshaft Check and questions

good evening,

successfully pulled my driveshaft today. not too bad once I was able to loosen the center nut. Its a good thing I decided to pull it, the center mount is toast! Couple questions...

1.) How do I check to see if the drive shaft joints are OK? I remember folks saying if there is a 'click' you can feel when moving the center joint then it needs to be replaced. Is this true? The driveshaft is not giving me any troubles, I just want to make sure before I put it back in.

2.) What type of grease should I use to re-assemble? The FSM calls out 6 grams of some lubricant thats specified in 266.2, which I cant find... Anyone have the info from 266.2?

Thanks! Ill post some pics in a minute. Ill do a writeup on this job when Im done. It wasn't that bad to pull the driveshaft.

dd

Arrow picture time

Pic 1 - Driveshaft out and on the driveway. Note my FSM article printed out....

I did *not* need to pull the exhaust. The shaft came out easily after I took the pin off the e-brake and dropped the exhaust a bit by taking off the hangers and placing the muffler on a jackstand.

Pic 2 - Two driveshaft halves marked with the teal paint. Its really important to line these up so when you remove the halves of the driveshaft you can reassemble it exactly the way it came apart. You can mess up the balance otherwise.

Pic 3 - my center mount has seen better days.

As I said, Ill do a full treatment of this soon. This job needs a pictorial...its sounds/reads much scarier than it really is.

Next session is to pull the center bearing/mount and replace.

Certainly not - sage advice. That would have been a stupid corner to cut.

Wow...yours looks even worse than mine did! Mine was ripped but not completely torn off yet...and it vibrated quite a bit.

My "U-joint" section or whatever it is did have the "notches" in it when you move it back and forth in either direction, more so in one of the directions than the other.....but I just put it all back in, and it seems to be vibration free and fine.

I used Castrol wheel bearing grease when reassembling.....

My support was pretty far gone when I took mine out. I didn't replace the bearing though and I wish I would have now. Oh well. Another job for next summer. I just used whatever grease was in the grease gun when I put mine back together.

DD, am sure you have a bit of wheel bearing grease in your garage especially if you changed wheel bearings. IMO, any good quality grease will work.

I don't recall how I reinstalled my support bearing. I think tapped it in.

tobybul,

Ive never repacked a wheel bearing So Ill need to grab some at AZ. Glad to hear this isn;t some sort of 'special' mercedes magic grease like what you find on the sunroof rails.

Center Bearing Question for those whove done this...

Removed my center bearing and mount last night...poised to put the new one in. WOW it took a lot of force to put it out with a puller!

I noticed the new NSK bearing I got from FastLane has more resistance than the original bearing. Its smooth, just turns with some more force.

Is this normal? I know one bearing has zero revolutions on it and the other has several million...but I wanted to check.

As long as it is smooth, it should be OK. Probably actually has some grease in it.

Make sure you have your mount oriented properly front to back before you tap in on home.

thanks! I just thought id ask.

Ill make sure I have it oriented correctly. Luckily the FSM is very explicit about this. I need to find pipes that are the exact sizes to tap it on home. Another Home Depot run looks to be in order.

Yes, I think it has a cutaway view that needs to be studied. Once you are sure you have it figured out, put a red dot on the front. I got interrupted in the middle of one of these and put it on backwards and had to pull it off. No fun trying this without trying to ruin it.

The driveshaft (and bearing) (the engine too) actually rotate about a million times for roughly every 800ish miles you drive (with the 3.07 diff)....so if that was the original bearing and has 206k on it...then it has spun probably over 260 million times! I have already put 410 miles on my new setup, and its running smoooth.

My new bearing also had more resistance than the old one....the old one still spun perfectly smooth though. It was beginning to corrode and rust though. And the force to get it off with the puller....yeah! I was pulling HARD on my 1/2 drive ratchet on my 5-TON bearing puller....and then it finally popped loose.
